general purpose

To operate a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of street, water, sewer, and storm drainage systems.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Employee has no supervisory responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

CORE COMPETENCIES:

Operates trucks of various sizes and weighs in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, materials, and supplies

Operates a variety of contractors equipment and trucks utilized in construction maintenance and repair activities

Operates small equipment and tools to maintain streets

Prepares concrete for curbs and gutters

Rakes Asphalt

Places and finishes concrete

Places and applies traffic control devices

Controls traffic at work sites by flagging to guide traffic through work areas, as required or assigned.

Maintains records of materials and equipment necessary to complete jobs.

Operates radio for communications between self and other workers.

Secures and maintains vehicle and area at the end of the working day.

Conducts safety and maintenance checks on equipment and machinery as needed per job.

Performs minor repairs on equipment and machinery as needed per job.

Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensures all behaviors comply with the Citys Personnel Rules and Regulations; possesses and maintains a valid drivers license and comply with City of Killeen driving policy.

Performs all On-call assignments as outlined in On-Call Schedule and Departmental Policy.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Required minimum qualifications

Education and Experience:

1. Six (6) months of experience involving the use of light and medium equipment, and

2. Graduation from high school or equivalent, preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Considerable knowledge of light equipment operating principles.
  2. Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to light equipment operations.
  3. Working knowledge of the methods, materials, and tools used in street and utility maintenance work.
  4. Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.
  5. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  6. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  7. Ability to observe proper safety precautions.
  8. Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, and the public.
  9. Ability to perform heavy manual tasks under varying weather conditions.
  10. Ability to drive and operate a variety of equipment under varying conditions.
  11. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  12. Ability to operate Microsoft Office products.

Special REQUIREMENTS

  1. Must have a valid Texas Class B CDL.
  2. Must have or acquire within thirty (30) days from date of hire all National Institute Management Systems (N.I.M.S.) certifications as required by City and position.

Motorized vehicles and equipment, including backhoe, payloader, excavator, maintainer, skid steer, pneumatic roller, steel wheel roller, 2000 gallon water truck, dump truck, and common hand and power tools, shovels, concrete saw, pick, jackhammer, chain saw, bull float, hand derby, asphalt rake, post hole auger, thermoplastic applicator, wacker packer, plate packer, walk behind roller, walk behind cut saw, weed eater, edger, pole saw, riding and push mower, etc.) and safety equipment as required.
