TxDOT San Antonio District's Bridge Design section is looking for a talented and motivated Design Specialist to serve as the primary design and drafting lead for bridge, retaining wall, and bridge repair projects in the San Antonio District. In this role, you’ll play a key part in shaping critical infrastructure by producing high-quality plans, developing detailed design drawings, and supporting engineering teams from concept through delivery.

Performs advanced and specialized drafting, calculations and design work; performs field work; uses automated systems; learns specialized techniques. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:
  • Performs advanced and specialized design work.
  • Performs advanced and specialized drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic presentations that include distinctive design features.
  • Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications.
  • Uses additional automated design tools or specialized design procedures in areas including bridge/culvert detailing, traffic management, geometric design, signal lighting design, retaining walls and building design.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

  • Experience: 6 years drafting, design, plan preparation. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

  • Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

  • Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes visual inspection of small defects/parts
